Support the Dean Dozen, Georgia State Rep. Alisha Thomas Morgan, Take Your Country Back

                          Ryan Roche

State Rep. Alisha Thomas Morgan who has served our community and state well, sponsoring and voting for feminist, family, and youth friendly legislation, now has opposition, Ryan Roche.

Another candidate running against Alisha, Morris Angel has equated keeping youths out of adult prisons, where they are raped and beaten, as being soft on crime, "My opponent has also sponsored legislation to decrease sentences for violent crimes. The July 20th primary is our referendum, our chance to cast our votes and clearly let our legislators know that we value protecting the institution of marriage as the union of a woman and a man. We value keeping violent offenders off of our streets."

What we need is to keep liars like Morris Angel off our ballots.  Here's what Alisha really did, and she should be commended:

Juvenile Justice Reform

Although Rep. Morgan has determined that Education and Health Care are her two primary issues, she has become the “champion” so to speak on the issue of changing the way juveniles who commit certain crimes are treated in Georgia.  Senate Bill 440 was passed in 1994 and made it legal to place youth ages 13-17 in adult prison for a minimum of ten years.  While there is no question than any person committing crime should be punished, Rep. Thomas Morgan’s position is that children should be treated as children.  Often times when placed in adult prison children are subjected to rape and other violence.  With no chance of parole and very little services, once these youth are released, they  become better criminals rather than productive citizens.  Rep. Thomas Morgan views this as a children’s issue and has become an advocate for changing the process by which these youth are treated. Last session she introduced House Bill 670 and will continue her efforts this session.  This legislation works to allow Juvenile Court Judges to make these decisions, allow youth who are treated as adults to serve until adult age in the Department of Juvenile Justice, and repeal the mandatory 10 year minimum.

Are Georgia parents who pay child support getting stiffed? No. Why would members of the pro-family Republican Party [Earl] author a bill that essentially rewards irresponsibility toward children?, Creative Loafing, By Tina Trent

"They can sugarcoat it and put bows on it, but what these [non-custodial] parents are really saying is my needs are more important that my child's needs," says lobbyist Vicki McLennon. "Every year the same group comes down to the Capitol and agitates to get out of obligations to their children."

The bill even allows non-custodial parents who engage in serial parenting or refuse to work to opt out of supporting their children if such support lowers their income below 133 percent of the federal poverty level.

March 19, 2004 Update, from Rep. Stephanie Stuckey Benfield

Representative Oliver’s HB 1489, legislation to tighten and restrict the bail procedure for those arrested for family violence, passed the House on March 17. With of vote count of 57- 100, Representative Oliver defeated an amendment by Representative Earl Ehrhart that would have weakened both the bill and current domestic violence law. The Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence requested HB 1489.
